Workshop Details

Dates: Saturday 11 July and Saturday 18 July

Time: 10:00-1600

Location: Judbury, Huon Valley, Tasmania

What's Provided: Raw wool, drop spindles, frame looms, weaving tools, lunch, tea. What you will leave with: your own hand-woven scarf or pouch, and the skills to explore further spinning and weaving projects beyond this workshop.

What to Expect

This is a two part workshop. On the first day we will introduce the ancient technique of hand spinning wool using drop spindles. You will transform raw wool into beautiful yarn, discovering the meditative rhythm of traditional spinning. You will be taught how to card wool, and given enough wool to continue spinning any extra length required to complete your chosen weaving project.

In the second week you will use our hand spun wool to weave with. Exploring the symbolism of loom weaving and experience the joy of weaving on frame looms. You will create your own unique textile, with the option of weaving either a scarf, pouch or simple tapestry depending on how much wool you wish to spin.

A nourishing lunch will be provided both weekends, as well as cups of tea to enjoy while we craft and chat together.

Why Attend?

Working with raw wool is a deeply connective practice, encouraging us to appreciate the beauty of natural materials, while engaging in a mindful practice that promotes relaxation and creativity. Weaving allows us space to reflect on the polarities of life as we balance tensions, weaving in and out, exploring our own creative expression.

Spinning and weaving are ancient and universal arts, in practicing them we awaken a part of ourselves that remembers our ancestral life ways, and we connect to fibres, natural resources, and objects more deeply, moving away from fast fashion and into meaningful creation.
