About the event

Intro to Honouring the Whole Animal

A day of traditional skills and connecting with our animal kin

Come and spend a day with us exploring traditional ways of working with the gifts an animal gives us.

Intro to Honouring the Whole Animal is an opportunity to gather together, share knowledge and reconnect with what used to be an everyday skill not so long ago. Never before have humans been so disconnected with where their food comes from, packets on a shelf at the shops, meat pre-processed and neatly wrapped in plastic. We think it is really important for people to reclaim their connection to the lives that sustain them in a way that fosters gratitude, empowerment and a sense of kinship with the animals we depend on. This can happen by learning to see the value in every part of an animal, approaching the process with respect, and discovering the skills needed to do so.

Throughout the day, we’ll explore a range of traditional practices through demonstrations, hands-on making and conversation:

  • We’ll begin with a skinning and butchering demonstration, showing effective skinning techniques and sharing information about the organs and their uses.

  • We’ll talk about traditional hide tanning methods and present a "show and tell" of various crafted items from leather, bone and antler.

  • Then in the afternoon we'll get everyone's hands busy making their own rawhide pouch to take home.

This is a day for asking questions, learning by watching and doing, and spending time with like- minded folks.

You don’t need any previous experience — just a little curiosity and a willingness to get involved.

A wholesome lunch and tea will be provided, with time to sit together, share a meal and integrate the leaning.

Whether you’re curious about hide tanning, animal processing, drawn to traditional crafts, or simply wanting to learn more about living in relationship with the natural world, you’re warmly welcome.
